10 Things Luffy Does Better Than Any Shonen Protagonist

For more than 20 years, One piece continues to receive the attention it deserves. Despite being the remaining show among the Big Three, some may think the hype would have died down by now. With no end in sight for the manga, viewers can only hope that more episodes will be produced. In fact, a live action adaptation of the series is even on its way to the big screen.

Despite amazing anime being released everywhere, Luffy is still a crowd favorite when it comes to shonen protagonists. He has been compared to other main characters on several occasions, but there are traits that he possesses that make him stand out from the rest.

10 Know when to run and accept defeat

As the captain of his crew, Luffy calls the shots. Difficult decisions include knowing if the team is strong enough to handle the opponent or if they are out of their league. A good battle strategist also has a strong sense of awareness of when to attack and when to flee.

While Luffy did have his fair share of losses, this does not make him a weakling or disqualify him as a leader. The main characters are expected to, if not always, never back down from a fight or challenge. Accepting defeat is not the same as being a loser, it is one more reason for Luffy to get stronger and come back prepared.

In almost any shonen anime, death is a recurring theme in the story. Some reasons include natural causes, illness, or brutal crimes, but for the most part it symbolizes the end of a battle.

Each villain has a purpose, whether it be to further the story or develop the character of the protagonist. One pieceLuffy’s fights are unique, but the most distinctive aspect of all of them is that none of Luffy’s enemies die after losing. According to Oda in SBS Volume 4Luffy’s principle behind never killing his enemies is to give them a chance to change or achieve their dreams.

Many would say that the only thing that makes Luffy strong is consuming the Devil Fruit. Despite coming from a terrifying lineage, he grew up with no one close to him except for his sworn brothers Ace and Sabo.

Garp threw a young Luffy into a deep ravine and forced him to fight for survival. Rather than discourage him, this even strengthened his determination to one day become a great pirate. Being born an underdog only serves as motivation for Luffy to fight his way, compared to other protagonists who are often born with innate strength and fighting abilities.

Most of the main characters are often ostracized for being different, but this is not the case with Luffy until he becomes a pirate. His childhood trauma stems from being abandoned by his father, then placed under the strict guardianship of his grandfather, and Sabo’s death (or so he thought).

The protagonists, compared to their youth, show a great contrast of character after the things they have been through. However, Luffy’s personality remained the same throughout the series, with his childish demeanor. Instead of his journey showing him going from a boy to a man, the anime portrays him as a man to a leader, either as the King of the Pirates or the Captain of the Straw Hats.

6 Simplicity best defines who he is as a person

Self-awareness may be an important trait for all of the protagonists, but many of them are self-absorbed to the point of overthinking and even having internal monologues. While he is known to mind his own business, Luffy often speaks without thinking of the consequences. This makes him seem blunt or just plain stupid.

His brutal honesty gets him into a lot of trouble, but at the same time, it’s also the foundation that builds trust with others. Oda doesn’t consider it essential for Luffy to think deep thoughts, but she also shows that Luffy is unapologetic about who he is.

5 The Straw Hats were selected by Luffy himself.

Friendships in shonen anime are formed under certain circumstances. For example, being childhood friends, schoolmates or meeting on the trip. But Luffy makes a conscious effort to search for his friends and invites them to join his crew.

Since he has a good personality, it is not difficult for him to form bonds with other people. The juxtaposition with other shonen anime friendships shows how Luffy didn’t make friends just out of convenience or sympathy. He chose his friends based on how they can help him become the Pirate King.

4 Humility is his crowning glory

Being humble and striving to be the best don’t usually go hand in hand. For someone like Luffy who wants to become King of the Pirates, newer fans might get the impression that he holds himself in high esteem for having such a dream. That’s just one of the things that makes Luffy such an unconventional protagonist.

Viewers became a part of the journey of how Luffy became the strong pirate and captain that he is today. But even someone as strong as him recognizes that he doesn’t know everything and that he can’t become the Pirate King without his crew.

3 Luffy never goes back on his word.

Promises are not easy to make, and even more difficult to keep. From a headcanon perspective, it might look like A PieceLuffy’s entire story ends with his promise to return the Straw Hat to Shanks. Inevitably, viewers expect him to become a great pirate and ultimately the Pirate King.

On various occasions, Luffy made promises to meet friends, defeat an enemy, and even not die until he completes his objective. While fans are still looking forward to how the manga will actually end, this illustration shows how good Luffy is at keeping his word.

two His quirks keep him in the spotlight

The leads are known for having tropes like bottomless pits for the stomach, lack of love interests, and being goofy. While Luffy possesses all of these traits, there are still aspects of his life that are shrouded in mystery, such as his middle name “D”, or just plain weird when he acts out of character to keep things interesting.

Imagine, his power is being a “rubber man”, while Zoro is an amazing swordsman, or Ace and Sabo have amazing fire powers. Compare this to other shonen anime and can do One piece It looks like an action comedy. And that just means that Luffy brings a variety of feelings to the audience.

1 Being the Pirate King is not about becoming the best

Luffy, compared to the beginning, has become much stronger. This brings him much closer to fulfilling his dream of finding One Piece to be the Pirate King. However, he makes it clear that his goal is not to be on top of the world, but simply to be free.

The Straw Hats even value protecting this dream more than their own lives, because it gave everyone a chance to achieve their own dreams. Despite his great achievements throughout the anime, it’s comforting for fans to know that Luffy isn’t starved for fame and power like other protagonists often are.
