Last week, 30-year-old cosplayer Anuli Duru took millennials by storm when she created 14 different looks inspired by “The Nanny.”
“‘The Nanny’ was indeed my style awakening,” she wrote on Instagram. “It’s one of my FAVORITE SHOWS OF ALL TIME.”
In the video, Duru dances and sings to the theme song for “The Nanny” while modeling different ’90s-inspired looks from her wardrobe. Duru wore everything from animal print outfits to cute plaid miniskirts with slanted berets.
His video was so good that it received rave reviews on Instagram from his 37,000 followers.
“My style inspiration since I was a kid 😂😍,” one person commented.
Another said: “I love it!!! Babysitting was the business and every last one of your outfits is great! Well done love!! 👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾🖤.”
The reaction she got from her fans made Duru proud of what she created. As a “perfectionist,” she noted that sometimes it can be hard to give herself credit, but when she sees glowing reviews like that on Instagram, she realizes that she’s doing something right.
“I’ve been doing these kinds of fashion videos for a while and they get relatively good feedback and reviews. And I say, ‘I love doing it.’ I just do it for fun and not for the likes and things like that, but I was really surprised that people were like, ‘Holy crap. This is great’. I was like, ‘Wow.’ So I was genuinely happy and surprised.”
Duru’s video was not difficult to make. Since he had been planning it for some time, she already knew the direction she wanted to take. First, she put together a Pinterest board that was filled with many different screenshots of “The Babysitter” and then she searched through her closet to find different looks that would work best.
“I was like, ‘Okay. I have the exact same thing,’” she laughed. “Fran Fine was literally the style icon. Fran has greatly inspired my own personal style.”
“I would definitely say the main difference is that their products are definitely Versace, definitely runway, and my products are like anywhere you can find a good deal and be as cheap as possible,” Duru added. “So yeah, I think the price tag is the only difference, but the idea was there.”
Duru has gained a large following on Instagram for her creative looks. She has been mostly seen dressing up as different Anime characters or modeling beautiful styles for various events. In February, she celebrated Black History by trying on 28 different all-black outfits and raising her fist at every shot.
“I really love dressing up,” she said. “My catchphrase on my Instagram is: ‘I like to dress up.’ I love fashion and just being able to express myself on a day-to-day basis and not even a specific style or aesthetic, but being able to experiment with aesthetics and being able to cross them.”
“So I take cosplay characters or even TV show characters, you know, ‘The Babysitter’ and reimagine them in my own way and in my own lifestyle and everything.”
Besides “The Nanny”, Duru says that she is also a big fan of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”.
“Both shows were my favorites because obviously I love Will Smith and Fran Drescher and the style of the time. The ’90s were an iconic time for style and people were going all out with animal prints and bold colors, and it was a great time to be free,” he said.
Though fans will have to wait to see if Duru will make a “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” fashion-inspired video, they won’t have to wait long to hear what he’s up to next.
Duru is currently in the process of creating her own line of wigs for anyone who loves changing up their look as much as she does, and says her brand will have everything from “spiky hair” to “rainbow” braids. .
“I’m just trying to get the funding together for that and hopefully release it this spring, early summer,” he said.
