Childhood sweethearts discover their promise might not be so easy to keep once they become adults..
Studio Ghibli 1995 anime movie heart whisper The image of young romance is as romantic as can be. A pair of 14-year-olds meet, fall in love and make a heartfelt promise to marry, despite knowing their academic and career ambitions mean they’ll spend years living on opposite sides of the planet before their wedding day.
It’s such an idyllic ending that some adults, realizing only too well how difficult it would be to keep such a relationship all the way to the altar, find it a bit depressing. But we are about to see if, and if so, how, the hearts of leading lady Shizuku and her childhood sweetheart Seiji remain united, as a live-action sequel to heart whisper is on its way, and its first trailer has just been released.
As the teaser opens, we hear 14-year-old Seiji declare “It is my dream to become a cellist” (a departure from the anime, where he wants to be a violin maker). That ambition will take him abroad for years to come, and young Shizuku, whose goal is to become a novelist, replies “While you are in Italy, I will continue studying and writing stories.”
▼ “I don’t know how many years it will take, but let’s get back here” Seiji says, as we watch a recreation of the Promise of Dawn that serves as the anime’s climax.
“10 years from the day they made that promise” informs us the text on the screen, followed by “The story of what happens to them begins now.” It’s not entirely clear if the live-action movie will be set in the present day or if it’s supposed to take place 10 years after the original. heart whisper Anime or manga with source material were released (1995 and 1989, respectively). In any case, Seiji and Shizuka have apparently kept in touch the old-fashioned way, with handwritten letters, sent in traditional red-and-blue-bordered airmail envelopes.
“Shizuku, how are you?” Seiji asks in his letter, his choice of words implying that his correspondence doesn’t have the frequency of today’s long-distance relationship text messages. “It’s been a long time,” we hear Shizuku say, further lending credence to the theory that his hearts might not have been whispering to each other the entire time they’ve been apart. There is also a special audio easter egg for anime fans, such as the voice saying the Japanese title of the movie, Mimi wo Sumasebaat the end of the video is that of Yoko Honna, Shizuku’s voice actress from the Ghibli anime.

The film opens in Japanese theaters on October 14, conveniently just about two weeks before Ghibli theme park, with its locations recreated from the heart whisper anime, premieres on November 1.
