Why Dabi’s goal was always self-destruction

my hero academia is preparing to further explore Dabi’s origins and ultimate motivations for becoming a villain, but in that exploration one thing has already become clear. As Dabi continues to burn at the cost of his own life, it becomes clearer that there is something more he wants. With the series keeping him mysterious until the events of the Paranormal Liberation Front War, the series has only scratched the surface of what makes Dabi tick as a villain. As it becomes clearer in the later chapters of the series, he wants something bigger.

The more Dabi’s flames continue to burn and the more he takes pride in himself as the latest failure of the Todoroki Family, the more his body burns. He’s clearly hotter than ever, but his own life is the last thing on his mind. In fact, he wants a total destruction of himself inside and out because he wants to damage Endeavor’s reputation (and thus the faith people have in heroes). The ultimate death for ultimate failure.

Chapter 349 of my hero academia interestingly it shows a whole new side of Dabi’s fight with his brother Shoto. As they prepare for their final battle, Dabi opens up about the disappointment of not being able to confront his father directly. In particular, he mentions how watching Endeavor’s fight in Hosu propelled him into his real action phase, and then once again laments how his father has essentially forgotten him. He then begins to delve into his ideas about how it is that people want to do things but are trapped within social constraints.

He then curiously looks back on his life as the “story” of how he became Dabi and how his villainous turn is a “tale” of why he is still alive today. Therefore, he is at the point where everything becomes a story for him. At this point, no matter what Shoto may say, Dabi has always gone ahead with the idea of self-destructing him. Toya is already dead, and now he wants it to count. That’s why it wasn’t revealed until it was such a public matter that he would treat Endeavor where he mattered most.

Because all this time, Endeavor has been living his life as “Endeavor” and has only recently pushed himself to be more “Enji Todoroki”. Physically hurting him or his family wouldn’t do any real harm, when you really think about it in Dabi’s terms. What better way to screw everything up than to literally screw yourself up in the process? What do you think? What do you think Dabi’s ultimate goal really is?
