With Grass-types among the options for each generation’s starter Pokémon, Ash manages to get one in most seasons of the anime, but it doesn’t always get the best of them. Ash’s Bulbasaur is the main standard bearer of the grass types, but there are many others that put on impressive displays.

10 Jeanette Fisher’s Bellsprout surprises everyone in the Indigo League

Jeanette Bellsprout

Bellsprout is often seen as some sort of joke Pokémon, from its design to its general moves. Consequently, when Jeanette Fisher’s Bellsprout defeats both Ash’s Bulbasaur and his Pikachu, it’s quite a surprise, especially since it’s on the big stage of the Indigo League.

Bellsprout is eventually stopped by Ash’s Muk, but not before he wreaks havoc on Ash’s team with surprising speed and alarmingly strong physical offense.

Anime Pokemon Ash's Turtwig Jumps

Ash’s Torterra is largely remembered for all the wrong reasons due to its disappointing record and overall performance since evolving from Turtwig. Interestingly though, he actually recorded some really impressive wins as Turtwig.

Despite Ash losing his first match against Oreburgh Gym Leader Roark, it is Turtwig who takes out his ace, Cranidos, before falling to the surprisingly powerful Onix. When Mallow and everyone else get caught up in an attack by Team Rocket in “A Seasoned Search”, Bounsweet takes it upon herself to evolve Steenee and defeat the villains, saving everyone else in the process.

7 Ash’s Grovyle relishes the opportunity to take down larger enemies

Before becoming a Darkrai assassin Sceptile, Ash’s Grovyle is seen as one of his main fighters during his Hoenn campaign, in which he scores numerous victories and defeats as both Grovyle and Treecko. While he manages to take down a massive Hariyama as Treecko, this pales in comparison to many of the victories he gets as Grovyle.

6 Ash’s Sceptile defeating Darkrai is a rare positive to take from Tobias’ defeat

Anime Pokemon Ash's Sceptile Slashes Darkrai

Ash’s loss to Tobias at the Lily of the Valley Conference in Sinnoh is often looked back on with frustration. Ash eventually manages to get past his main rival, Paul, only to lose to Tobias in the next round. In a 6v6, Tobias only has to reveal two of his team, Darkrai and Latios, taking down Ash’s entire team with relative ease.

While Latios is forced into an impressive double knockout by Ash’s Pikachu, Darkrai’s loss to Sceptile is the only outright loss for Tobias during this battle. Sceptile may fall to Latios after his grueling trade with Darkrai, but no one can dispute that Sceptile defied the odds and took down a Mythical Pokemon.

Trip and his Snivy, Pokémon

Ash’s Pikachu loss to a newly obtained Snivy is always considered one of Pikachu’s worst losses, but on the other hand he sees it as a huge win for a starter Pokémon that is still getting to know its trainer.

Pikachu may not be at his full power due to the previous incident where he was hit by an alarming amount of electricity, rendering him unable to use Electric-type attacks. However, he must still have enough experience and means to win with moves like Quick Attack and Iron Tail being proven moves.

Having previously experienced Weepinbell as an easy opponent when fighting Erika, Ash completely underestimates Ramos’ version of the Flycatcher Pokémon. Weepinbell defies her type disadvantages by outwitting and defeating flying-types Hawlucha and Talonflame before she finally falls to Ash’s Frogadier.

1 Rowlet Surprises Everyone By Surpassing His Evolved Decidueye Form At Manalo Conference

Rowlet is one of Ash’s most endearing Pokémon in the anime. When he manages to defeat Hau’s fully evolved Decidueye at the Manalo Conference, it becomes one of several feel-good moments to come up in the Alola League.

Despite being seen as lazy and unpredictable, Rowlet’s story of accepting who she is with the addition of swallowing an Everstone to prevent evolution is entertaining and inspiring. Rowlet even dons a Decidueye hood for his battle against Hau’s Decidueye, which makes his underdog victory look even better.
