A talented piece of cosplay brings Sonya Blade, one of the oldest and most recognizable fighters in the Mortal Kombat franchise, into the real world.

A talented cosplayer recently revealed a retro recreation of Sonya Blade, one of the Mortal Kombat the oldest and best known franchise “kombatants.” Since 1992, the brutal fighting game franchise has delivered, and continues to deliver, fast-paced action, bloody finishing moves, and memorable characters to a growing fanbase. Despite the truly monstrous nature of many series mainstays, Mortal Kombat Cosplays have become quite popular among those who take to dressing up for a beating.

With almost 30 years of history behind it, the Mortal Kombat The series has established a wide variety of playable characters that are still recognizable today. The original installment’s roster of seven ruthless kombatants, particularly the opposing duo of Scorpion and Sub-Zero, are still seen as add-ons to each new entry in the bloody saga. The two elemental ninjas are often cosplayed, along with other classic characters like Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage and Raiden; and numerous sequels and spin-offs have introduced even more unusual designs. While the military-grade warrior has received a lot of cosmetic redesigns and costumes over the years, this particular outfit is based on her throwback outfit from 1992. Tniwe brings back Sonya’s original design down to the last detail, including her hairstyle, sparkly white sneakers, weird bracelets, and red lipstick. Even the character’s pose is maintained, with Tniwe poised for kombat with one fist raised forward and the other ready to strike at her opponent.


While the unforgiving bloody fighting game franchise has come a long way, many Mortal Kombat Fans like Tniwe remain loyal to the show’s ’90s roots. Mortal Kombat 11 brought extensive character customization and near-photorealistic graphics in 2019, but many gamers still want to see a remaster of the original Mortal Kombat trilogy. An indie game developer called Eyeballistic recently started a petition to develop such a project, with 4K-rendered screenshots of retro games serving as proof of concept. The indie studio claims they pitched the idea to Warner Bros. five years ago, but were turned down despite support from series co-creator Ed Boon. With cosplayers like Tniwe recreating classic character designs, there seems to be some demand for a remake of early entries in the franchise.
