Pokemon finally brought Ash Ketchum and Serena together for a bittersweet reunion that definitely broke the hearts of many fans with the most recent episode of pokemon trips! The most recent iteration of the anime has seen Ash meet many of the familiar friends and foes that he has met over the course of his adventures thus far, but there were still a few big names that fans had been requesting to return. One at the top of many of these lists was Serena, who is still probably the favorite travel companion Ash has had in the past, and fans wanted an update on how he’s been so far.
pokemon trips has been bringing these older characters back while providing updates on how they’ve lived their lives since they were last seen on the series, and that’s why fans were especially excited to see Serena making her return. Returning to anime after six long years since fans of her saw her travel to the Hoenn region at the end of the X and Y series, Serena and Ash also had a long-awaited reunion. Episode 105 of pokemon trips brings Serena back not for Ash, but to help Chloe. When Chloe heads to the Hoenn region to meet up with Ash and Goh, she ends up being recruited to participate in an upcoming Pokémon Contest. Meeting Serena along the way, Serena opens up to Chloe and helps the young adventurer find a new path for herself. Serena is much older and more experienced than the version we’ve seen before, and even passes on some of the lessons she learned from Ash during their time together.
It wasn’t until the end of the episode that Ash and Serena saw each other. Ash didn’t recognize her at first (instead running past her), but she sees him right away. As Ash prepares to leave on a heading ship, the two soon realize that their meeting has been cut short. Her boat starts to set sail, so Ash yells at Serena that she’s currently in the Coronation World Series, and Serena tells him that she too aspires to become the best at Pokémon Contests. The two continue to encourage each other as they head towards their dreams.
However, the final part of the heartbreak is the revelation that Serena rejected Ash and the others until well after sunset. After pausing for a moment to reflect on everything, she continues on her own journey. So while the two had their long-awaited reunion, it’s probably not the one fans wanted to see.
