In the wake of Tiger & Bunny The Movie -The Uprising-, faith in the superhero industry has continued to decline even as the number of heroes has grown around the world. To combat this, Hero TV has instituted a buddy system for its superheroes, allowing newcomers and seasoned heroes alike to learn how to work better as a team while competing for a shared trophy. Of course, there is no couple more experienced than Tiger & Barnaby. However, while some things change, others remain largely the same.

This first episode is about establishing the new status quo. The episode begins with a lengthy chase scene where we are introduced to all of our main players, including some new ones, as well as their powers. We also see Kotetsu’s own powers continue to fade, forcing him to rely more and more on his power suit, which prevents Barnaby from scoring points.

But what’s important to note is that while Kotetsu and Barnaby fight for most of this episode, it’s not because of anything related to their professional lives. Barnaby isn’t mad that Kotetsu’s powers are fading or that he didn’t show up to stop the armored truck because he got distracted helping a kid retrieve the balloon from him. The fact is that Kotetsu and Barnaby are still very different people despite all the time they’ve worked together. They get on each other’s nerves, constantly arguing with each other to a childish degree.

However, the climax shows us that, when it comes to being heroes, they are much more in sync than any other pair. Before Kotetsu removes his helmet, Barnaby is already flanking the villain, ready to take advantage of the distraction he knows is coming. And when he arrives, he takes action, taking down the villain in an instant. It’s solid visual storytelling. It lets us in on why the pair are at the core of North Carolina’s superhero community.

Then we have the villain of the week bonus which has the power to remove the kinetic energy of an object, effectively stopping anything it comes into contact with. It basically serves as the episode’s mini-mystery: “How do you defeat a person you can’t touch or shoot?” The answer is smart, you have to know an attack is coming to stop it. Therefore, he cannot stop an object out of his line of sight, especially if he is moving at the speed of a hundred-power kick. There is no time to react. Fun things.

In the end, although it is far from being the best episode of tiger and bunnyThe season premiere does its job well of laying the groundwork for all that is to come while also showing that our heroic duo has grown, even if they don’t always show it.
