An anime YouTuber boldly edited the entirety of narutofill arcs and all, into an “easier” and more enjoyable viewing experience.
the “Big Three” Anime, naruto, BleachY One pieceThey are essential watches for each Shōnen-Loving otaku. Along with the influence of being the most popular series of the mid-2000s, however, comes its shared burden of being daunting. This isn’t helped by its seemingly endless “filler” arcs and icy pacing.
After YouTuber Oceaniz and his girlfriend Laura ran out of anime to watch together, he worked up the courage to ask the big question (no, not that one): “Would you watch naruto with me if I edit it to make it less silly to watch?
“naruto It was an immensely influential series for me,” Oceaniz said. Kotaku. “I just like to share things that are important to me with people that are important to me.”
Oceaniz said Kotaku this is not the first time he has mentioned the idea of seeing naruto with her, but the prospect of seeing all 720 episodes and enduring her excessive use of flashbacks and aggressive filler episodes made shonen anime a very hard sell. However, as they watched more anime together—my hero academia, attack on titanY JoJo’s Bizarre Adventureamong others—Oceaniz said looking naruto it became “much more feasible”.
“That’s when I decided it was now or never to finally do that custom naruto cut I’ve wanted for years,” Oceaniz said. Kotaku. “And doing it for a loved one was a great excuse.”
Enjoying the other anime turned out to be enough to immerse herself in the medium for Laura to go along with her proposal. After a sheepish “Sure, honey” from Laura, Oceaniz fired up Adobe Premiere and got to work making Naruto: The cut of the ocean.
“Making The Ocean Cut took about three months, with a lot of long nights of me doing it,” said Oceaniz. Kotaku. “I started in January and finished in mid-March.”
Yesterday, Oceaniz uploaded a 30-minute YouTube video titled “I re-edited ALL of Naruto for my girlfriend,” in which he details his journey condensing naruto and tailoring it specifically to your liking.
The first rule of Ocean Cut is that it is the English dubbed version of naruto.
“I’m sorry, I’m not sorry,” Oceaniz said in the video. “This is a home that watches dub and it’s my version of it so I was always going to do it that way.”
Fan edits are not new naruto In fact, other cuts like naruto kai it aimed to remove all filler episodes from the series. Oceaniz, however, did not feel that the fan edition would be the best introduction because he found it “too draconic” in the way it strictly adhered to manga-centric content, thus robbing the series of its best original anime moments.
Once it got going, Oceaniz used to take three to six television episodes that were about 20 minutes each and condense them into 50- to 120-minute “Ocean Cut” episodes. His YouTube video goes into great detail about his thought process for cutting content like The Naruto Diarrhea Incidentall the sexy jutsu nonsense, and JiraiyaThe introduction of the perverted sage super-didn’t age well. He even went the extra mile translating Japanese and the like signs into English, much like how Crunchyroll handles its on-screen translations.
having grown up with naruto, Oceaniz was well aware that he had a great company ahead of him. The biggest lifts would come from narutoThe notoriously lengthy filler episodes, occasionally turning into full arcs, and the show’s numerous flashback sequences, which would often portray scenes that occurred only seconds before.
“The flashbacks in particular are so bad that certain scenes are shown, no kidding, 20 different times, and only a fraction of them show new information,” Oceaniz said in the video.
Not all filler episodes were cut from The Ocean Cut. Well-regarded filler episodes like “I have to see! I have to know! The true face of Kakashi-sensei!”, were assigned to a “Themed Special Episodes” segment of The Ocean Cut. But sadly (some might argue) the infamous “Tea Land Escort Mission” episodes didn’t make the cut.
“I cut that shit so fast. It’s very boring and badly animated,” Oceaniz said in the video. “Don’t bother with that.”
naruto shippuden, naruto‘s time jump bow, turned out to be a S rank level company for the flourishing publisher. According to Oceaniz, Shippuden is where naruto “Really [went] off the rails” with its awful pacing, long chunks of information dumping, and mid-resolution story structure that would regularly spoil major plot points.
“[That] it was easily the lowest part of the project,” Oceaniz said on YouTube. “Once we started seeing The Ocean Cut version of the Tenchi Bridge Arch especially, its tectonic rhythm stood out so much that my girlfriend asked me directly if we could jump to the end of the arch and if I could tell her what happened.”
Oceaniz found filler content and pseudo-filler content in Shippuden more complicated to cut because on that show it has a tendency to bleed into canon beats. While he admitted that this made for a flawed segment of The Ocean Cut, Oceanic tried to rearrange the main arcs into Shippuden so they would make more sequential sense not only in naruto proper, but to allow for missing occasional references to occurrences adjacent to the fill that were left out of the new cut. The same as naruto correctly, Oceaniz made sure to keep emotionally resonant anime-original scenes in The Ocean Cut, especially the conversation between Shikamaru and his father while playing shogipossibly the best emotional moment in anime.
the Shippuden The anime doesn’t end exactly the way the manga does. Instead of Naruto achieving his childhood dream of becoming hokage (ninja president) at the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War, the anime includes, you guessed it, even more filler content. Unlike the previous filler examples which don’t add to the big story of naruto, ShippudenThe post filler of is quite wholesome and fills in the gaps between the war and Naruto finally becoming Hokage with content from naruto‘s light novels.
“Most of those things are really good, of course I added them,” Oceaniz said on YouTube. “And of course The last It is a must visit in this house. Bite me.”
Ultimately, The Ocean Cut does not alter naruto‘s story, with the exception of Oceaniz which includes an epilogue, told through self-made title cards, in which Orochimaru Y Kabuto face the consequences of their war crimes, while in the anime and manga they got away with it.
In its entirety, canon 720 naruto episode watch in 250 hours of orange monkey airhead ninja content, while viewing The Ocean Cut would be it takes only 135 hours. For more details, including the answer to the inevitable “Can I see it myself?” question, see his youtube video.
In the end, did the hard work of Oceaniz edit the entirety of naruto make a painless viewing experience for your girlfriend? Laura’s verdict is a resounding yes.
“Surprisingly, it was one of the best shows you’ve shown me so far,” he told her.
seeing how wonderfully naruto: The cut of the ocean went to find his partner, I couldn’t help but ask him if there were any potential plans for an “Ocean Court” treatment for boruto, the spin-off series starring Naruto’s son. Oceaniz did not take the question kindly.
“boruto Ocean Cut is NOT happening because a) I don’t particularly like it boruto and b) since the difference between the boruto lively and boruto manga are so big, bigger than [Naruto’s] outside, it would be a huge undertaking for a series I don’t know as well as naruto.”
I had to try it.
